Adopt
an Irish Ewe
Not everyone can raise sheep. And not everyone can visit Ireland. But
you can live vicariously through your very own Irish sheep!
Our program allows you to adopt a sheep for a year, name it, receive newsletters
from the farmer 4 times a year telling what your sheep is doing, and in
August of 2006, you will receive your sheep's actual fleece. You can process
the fleece yourself or we can have it washed & carded into roving
at our local Maine mill (add'l charge will apply) . If you wish, you can
also have it spun into yarn.
This is a great birthday
present, Christmas present or a gift for a spinner, knitter, or an Irish
person who wants the benefit of owning their own Irish sheep without the
hassle of feeding it every day!
If you travel to
Ireland, you can even visit your sheep in person & meet Kelly &
Denis.
The annual adoption
fee of $125 includes naming, newsletter, and fleece delivered to your
door.
This is part of the 600+ sheep on the Jack-Paddy & Denis O'Sullivan
farm in rural County Kerry. Kelly the Border collie keeps a watchful eye
while we take photos. When Denis whistles to her, Kelly can herd 1 sheep
or many (depending on what Denis wants) from a high mountain down to Denis
in the field below. The sheep are marked with various colors of dye to
designate the farm they come from and what shots they have had. The numbers
are used to show which twin & triplet lambs belong to which ewe, for
instance in the photos you can see #16 ewe with two #16 lambs. She was
the 16th ewe to deliver twins in 2005. The blue stripe on the rump means
the sheep belong to the O'Sullivan farm in Coolnacuppogue near Kenmare
Ireland. The blue spot on the neck means they have had their inoculations
for 2005.
