Fixing a wrongly crossed cable

Knitty Purl answers the first question in her mailbox this week.
Sharon asks - "Is there any way to fix a cable that I crossed in the wrong direction rows below, without ripping back?"

Knitty Purl answers - Yes! But the way is wrought with heartstopping twists and turns (no pun intented tongue.gif)

Let's take a look at a recent snag in my own knitting -

Being much more content to not repeat previous knitted work due to sheer stupidity, I decided to attempt to drop the stitches down and cross them the correct way -

And what do you know, you can push those errant stitches back into their proper and respectful places -

Then it's a matter of dragging those naughtly little stitches back up again. Notice that as I dropped 3 stitches, I picked the middle one up first, in order to leave myself equel spaces on either side for the other 2 stitches.

As this was a 6 stitch cable with moss stitches, please note that I dropped the 3 knit stitches, as it is much easier to pull them back up in stockinette stitch than it is to work moss stitch.

And there you go, you can fix a cable rows below!

Until next week ~ Knitty Purl

Hi,

Great information. Do you know how to fix a miscrossed cable that is at the beginning of a 6 foot scarf. I read some brief information about cutting the top stiches where they start the crossover in the wrong direction and then grafting them below the properly crossed cable. Can you show how to do that ?

Thanks...

Dagny notes - Interesting challange! I will sit down and puzzle it out this week, but my first thought would be to cut on the line above the cable, then re-knit the edge and bind off.

Seems a good idea..It is difficult to undo knitting from the cast on edge I wonder if cables can be knitted upside down?ie if the knitting could be undone from the cast on edge and then picked up again and knitted upside down Grafting is difficult and can leave a ridge Alternatively might be possible to make a miscrossed cable at the otherend ie finishing end of scarf to match the miscrossed cable at the beginning of scarf .

Dagny notes - Sadly, it is near impossible to unravel knitting from the cast on edge, it just doesn't work without actually unweaving each stitch. Just the way knitted fabric is formed. I usually wind up cutting the row below, pulling out all the little pieces of yarn, picking up the loops and working down from there.
